Being passionate about birds, I started to draw and paint in order to express my love for these beautiful, intelligent creatures. As a parrot flock’s cleaning woman, jungle gym, cook, provider and slave, I want to be able to share this crazy, joyful obsession with others through my art. My artwork is the result of studying drawing and painting at Glendale Community College (GCC) since August, 2004. In addition, I am a juried member of the Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA), member of Arizona Artists Guild, and a juried member of the Arizona Art Alliance. My paintings and drawings have been shown in exhibitions sponsored by AWA, AAA, GCC, Glendale Arts Council, the Arizona State Fair, Brio, and the Chancellor of Maricopa Community Colleges. Several of my artworks have been donated to Liberty Wildlife, the Save the Blues Bird Endowment, the Phoenix Zoo, Armonia Assocition, the Alex Foundation, the Oasis Sanctuary, and the Loro Parque Foundation.
As a wildlife rehabber, I see the effect society has on our shrinking native wildlife populations, slowly robbing them of their environment. My artwork gives me a chance to express the beauty of these feathered, furred and scaled treasures. My hope is that when people see my paintings or drawings, they will fall in love, join me, and take a walk on the wild side. There is much work to be done to ensure that these lives entrusted into our keeping are cared for properly and that native creatures have a place to live wild and free.
Dedicated To the Volunteers of Liberty Wildlife
Feathered brothers and sisters, you came to us broken and as you bled…….we saw you desperate, dehydrated, desiccated, diseased, distressed, emaciated, famished, frayed, frightened, helpless, hungry, ragged, ravenous, shaken, shocked, shot, sickly, stressed, stunned, tattered, thirsty, traumatized, torn, weary and wounded. Defiantly, you stood us off with your last breath as we tried to tend to you. We saw you come in as cute, naked, fuzzy, cuddly youth, as mischievous, defiant adolescents, as fierce, regal rulers of the sky and as cunning, maimed elders whose time on earth was almost done. You endeared yourselves to us, bit us, charmed us, footed us, delighted us, hissed at us, talked to us, mantled at us, and graced us with your presence.
Some of you mended and were able to go on your way, never looking back. Some of you were injured in ways that prevented you from going, so you stayed with us to teach us…….And we came to love you. Others were too far gone, and you went home – where you fly free from pain with the Great One. All of you have touched us, and we are changed because of you.

Hi, Arlene, I’ve nominated you for the Beautiful Blogger Award – feel free to accept or decline. I know it’s chain-letter format (not usually my thing), but I thought I’d use it as an opportunity to share some of the blogs I’ve been enjoying. x
Beautiful work, Arlene. :0) I’ve seen thousands of paintings over the years but have seldom seen watercolour birds. Can you believe it? It’s refreshing and different. Impressive credentials! Great to meet you. :0)
Thanks you for the kind words about my artwork! Very nice to meet you through your blog!
And you too. 🙂
Anyone that loves art, birds and most any other indicator of a life well lived MUST look closer at Arlene. Not only your work in Avian art, wildlife rescue, balooning, and costume design (to name a few) but sharing your journey for decades has inspired me to keep trying – no matter what – every week. You are the iconic Bertimus Maximus!
Thank you Bertimus. I am so happy to have you in my life, though you are a roaming free spirit, you always make the effort to stay in touch. Your journey touches me too! You are an inspiration. Keep on rocking that writing Bert!
